History of Lindsey Roads Cycling Club

The Lindsey Roads Cycling Club was established in October 1970, primarily focusing on younger cyclists. By affiliating with all the major cycling bodies in the UK, the club provided opportunities for riders to engage in various aspects of cycling as a sport and hobby. Locally, we organised weekly club nights, Sunday morning club runs, and a comprehensive schedule of time trials on Tuesday evenings.

Many school-aged members successfully completed the English Schools Cycling Association (E.S.C.A.) awards in the early years. To qualify, riders had to complete distances of 25, 50, and 100 miles within specified time limits to achieve bronze, silver, and gold standards. (The E.S.C.A. is now known as the British Schools Cycling Association.)

The club could participate in Area and National Championships nationwide with strong parental support. These events often resulted in riders returning home with medals of various colours. Notably, Paul Wakefield won the E.S.C.A. Circuit Race Championships in 1972.

Following those initial formative years, LRCC continued establishing its presence in the cycling community.

Steve Lawrence became a double National Road Race Champion, a Commonwealth Gold Medal winner, and represented Britain at the World Championships. Steve Wakefield rode for Great Britain, competing in the Milk Race (now known as the Tour of Britain) and the Peace Race in Eastern Europe.

Kevin Davis, Andy Johnson, Paul Brown, Graham Watson, and John Morstead emerged as prolific winners in the junior category. John later returned to the U.S.A. and became the Texas Road Race Champion multiple times. Both Steve Wakefield and Andy Johnson eventually moved up to the professional ranks.

In recent years, our older members have garnered significant attention for the club, achieving impressive results in Time Trials. Notable performances include those from Pete Cartledge and Ted Battersby. Additionally, Steve Marrows, Paul, and Steve Wakefield have all won the National Titles in the age-related Veterans Road Championships.
